HIGH ALTITUDE DINING – LE PANORAMIQUE RESTAURANT IN MONTENVERS, CHAMONIX

Le Panoramique, a new alpine restaurant with truly breathtaking views from its mountain top terrace over the Mer de Glace in Montenvers, Chamonix, opened in December 2016.

January 17thFrance

Le Panoramique boasts spectacular 360° views from its mountain top panoramic terrace, located at one of the most famous and dramatic locations in the French Alps. Le Panoramique is the ultimate new lunchtime spot this ski season – visitors can sample regional Savoyarde specialties, whilst enjoying breathtaking views over the valley towards Mont Blanc. The iconic site for this exciting new restaurant has an illustrious history – the Mer de Glace has attracted visitors, skiers and climbers since the 17th century, drawn by its flawless vistas. The glacier covers over 7km and has been used many times as a filming location, most famously for “Frankenstein”, and the roll call of famous visitors throughout the years include Lord Byron, Alexandre Dumas, Goethe and Victor Hugo. Le Panoramique’s atmosphere maintains this sense of alpine history whilst incorporating a new modern aesthetic. The design of the new restaurant channels the charm of an old dairy with a contemporary industrial twist, minimalist decorations, ceramic tiling and milk cans. Traditional French alpine classics are served in cast-iron casserole dishes – guests can sample the Savoyard hotpot with sausage and ham hock, “Grandmother’s Chicken”, and a delicious alpine take on Mac & Cheese made with local Beaufort cheese. Also on offer is the traditional potato dish “Pela des Aravis” and a delicious “Legumes d’hiver” broth made with spelt. Those with a sweet tooth will love the home-made desserts, including the “Mer de Glace” vacherin ice-cream cake, the traditional “Mont Blanc” meringue with chestnut cream and the “Dome de Gouter” with chocolate, hazelnut and spiced caramel. Adventurous skiers and hikers will enjoy the approach to this remote restaurant. Access to it is either by the Aiguille du Midi platform, the Grand Montets ski or by climbing and crossing the Mer de Glace to reach the staircase and the cable car to the Montenvers train station. The more leisurely visitor can reach the restaurant from Chamonix on the Montenvers railway and enjoy the scenic route on the famous little red train, through the pine forests and ending at the restaurant. In June 2017, a new high mountain refuge located 300m away from the restaurant will become home to Terminal Neige – Refuge, after it has undergone a total renovation. It will be the second opening under Maisons & Hotels innovative new alpine label, Terminal Neige, following the launch of Terminal Neige Totem hotel in the French resort of Flaine last season.
