INTRODUCING MONACI DELLE TERRE NERE A VOLCANIC VINEYARD ECO-RESORT FROM THE 18TH CENTURY, DRAMATICALLY SET ON A 62-ACRE ESTATE ON THE FOOTHILLS OF MOUNT ETNA, SICILY
September 8thSICILY

Perowne International is delighted to announce its appointment as the PR representative for Monaci delle Terre Nere; a boutique hotel filled with character and charm, set deep in rich natural surroundings, with a spirit of unpretentious, understated luxury. This family-owned property, part of Relais & Chateaux, is dramatically positioned on a spectacular 62-acre estate on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, the largest active volcano in Europe and a UNESCO heritage site, with views over the vineyards and down to the Mediterranean Sea.
THE ESTATE – LA DOLCE VITA REIMAGINED
Comprising a historic 18th century manor house and 24 scattered villas, suites, and signature rooms surrounded by tranquil gardens and vineyards, Monaci delle Terre Nere is perfect for those who truly want to immerse themselves in rustic Sicilian country life. It is built on the principles of sustainability and slow food and is the ideal base from which to explore Etna by hike, horse, or helicopter, remaining within easy reach of Taormina, Catania, and the eastern coast of Sicily.
The estate was originally used by a group of Monks of the Order of the barefoot Augustinians of Valverde who settled in the area in the 18th century. The monks cultivated the land, planted vineyards and fruits, and built a small chapel on the property. Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times, passing from one noble family to another. In 2009, Guido Coffa, a young entrepreneur with a passion for hospitality, purchased the property. Coffa was born and raised in Sicily and had a vision to transform the abandoned estate into an intimate luxury retreat. He spent several years restoring the property, preserving its historic features while adding modern amenities as a labour of love.
The redesigned estate brings a new, more relaxed sense of low-key luxury to Sicily. Uniquely curated from existing foundations, such as mills and animal shelters, each villa has its own special story to tell. Combining traditional Italian architecture with contemporary design, the villas have been thoughtfully furnished with Sicilian artifacts, antiques and playful art by British artist, Olivier Mourão. A handful have private pools overlooking the Sea, while others have been redesigned with large private terraces for families and groups. Many villas also have fireplaces, lava stone walls and original tile features, as well as a large glass façade so guests feel truly immersed in their natural surroundings.
Beyond the gardens and greenery, one is spoilt for choice with an array of activities: guided tours of the estate, private cooking lessons, cocktail masterclasses, group bike excursions, horseback riding, wine tastings, outdoor spa treatments, and yoga.
THE GASTRONOMY – AUTHENTIC & REFINED
Authenticity, seasonality, and Sicilian origins are what inspires the dining offering at Monaci delle Terre Nere. Set amongst a working vineyard, the estate is planted with organic grapevines, native fruit orchards, and abundant kitchen gardens, all from which the local team procures incredible produce for the estate’s restaurant, Locanda Nerello. The restaurant serves traditional Sicilian cuisine fusing ancient flavours with a contemporary flair, to be enjoyed by guests in an exclusive, yet rather relaxed dining environment; on the terrace overlooking the sea, in the cosy, fireside dining rooms of Locanda Nerello, or within the mysterious ancient millstone of the manor house. For those seeking more informal dining, the poolside restaurant offers simple, fresh meals determined by seasonal produce and daily harvests.
Mount Etna is the third most important region in Italy for wine production, thanks to the unique climate, rich terrain, and variety of volcanic soil. With its own 15-acre winery, Monaci delle Terre Nere also successfully produces six of its own hand-picked wines that are organic, bold, tannic, and unapologetically Sicilian – perfect for pairing with the local cuisine. The resort also supplies local wines, international labels, and biodynamic Champagne.
THE MOMENT – SICILY
As the island begins to reopen for the 2023 season, Sicily is set to have its biggest year yet. With its picturesque landscapes and magnificent coastlines, rich cultural experiences and historical monuments, Sicily has become one of Europe’s most desirable destinations. Despite increased popularity and appeal, it still feels natural and rugged with a sense of mystery. Travellers should expect an all-encompassing, magical experience when visiting Sicily, for it is the moment.
